A pip is a unit of measurement used in Forex trading to represent the smallest standard price movement of a currency pair.
The value of a pip depends on:
- Currency pair
- Trade volume (lot size)
- Exchange rate
For most major currency pairs, 1 standard lot (100,000 units) is approximately equal to $10 per pip.
Pip Value Calculation
General Formula:
Pip Value = Pip Size × Trade Volume × Exchange Rate (if applicable)
Example 1: EUR/USD
Trade Details:
- Buy 1 lot (100,000 units) EUR/USD at 1.29530
- Close at 1.29930
Price Movement:
1.29930 - 1.29530 = 40 pips
Profit Calculation:
40 pips × $10 = $400 profit
Example 2: GBP/USD
Trade Details:
- Buy 5 lots (500,000 units) GBP/USD
- Price movement: 72 pips
For 5 lots:
1 pip value = $10 × 5 = $50
Profit Calculation:
72 pips × $50 = $3,600 profit
Example 3: USD/JPY
For currency pairs where USD is the base currency, pip value depends on the exchange rate.
Formula:
Pip Value = (0.01 ÷ Exchange Rate) × Trade Size
Example:
USD/JPY exchange rate: 97.503
(0.01 ÷ 97.503) × 100,000 = approximately $10.26 per pip
Important Notes
- A larger trade volume increases the value of each pip movement.
- Higher pip value means both potential profits and potential losses can increase.
- Traders should consider their position size and risk management before opening a trade.
