A Trailing Stop is a dynamic Stop Loss feature that automatically adjusts your Stop Loss level as the market price moves in your favour.
Unlike a regular Stop Loss, which remains fixed after being placed, a Trailing Stop follows the market price at a predefined distance. This helps traders manage risk and protect potential profits while allowing positions to continue running.
How to Set a Trailing Stop on MT4
- Open the MT4 platform.
- Navigate to the Trade tab to view your open positions.
- Right-click on the position you want to apply a Trailing Stop.
- Select Trailing Stop.
- Choose your preferred trailing distance from the available options.
- The Trailing Stop will be activated and will automatically adjust as the market moves.
How to Set a Trailing Stop on MT5
- Open the MT5 platform.
- Navigate to the Trade tab to view your open positions.
- Right-click on the position you want to manage.
- Select Trailing Stop.
- Choose your preferred trailing distance.
- The Trailing Stop will be activated and will automatically adjust based on market movements.
Example
If you open a Buy position and set a 50-point Trailing Stop:
- When the market price moves higher, the Stop Loss level will automatically move upward while maintaining the selected distance.
- If the market price reverses and reaches the adjusted Stop Loss level, the position will be closed.
Important Notes
- A Trailing Stop only moves in the direction of a profitable trade and does not move backwards.
- The Trailing Stop function requires the trading platform to remain open and connected to operate.
- A Trailing Stop does not guarantee execution at the exact requested price, as execution may be affected by market conditions, liquidity, and price movements.
- Trailing Stop is available on MT4 and MT5 desktop platforms. It is not directly available on MT4/MT5 mobile applications.
